Downtown Lakewood megaproject gets final OK

Two panels of elected officials voted simultaneously last night to approve agreements authorizing the Downtown Lakewood development to start as early as Aug. 30, 2025. The $119 million mixed-use project will finally repurpose the former site of the city-owned Lakewood Hospital that closed in 2016 and has sat largely devoid of structures for five years.

Downtown Lakewood development to go without grocery store

Developers of the proposed Downtown Lakewood mixed-use development said it was a mix of good and bad news that a grocery store chain backed out of the project. The good news is that the developers can proceed with a previous plan to offer a larger public plaza facing Detroit Avenue. The bad news was that revising the plans to accommodate the grocer cost the developers eight months of time and inflation in delivering the $100-plus-million project.

New Downtown Lakewood plan, grocery store announced

Sitting dormant since Lakewood Hospital closed in 2016 and was demolished in 2019, a 6-acre city-owned site in Downtown Lakewood has a fresh strategy and a new tenant to finally reactivate it. While that strategy and a new tenant, a neighborhood grocery store, was enthusiastically received by City Council members at a committee meeting tonight, it remains to be seen whether it can overcome financing hurdles affecting it and all other projects nationwide.
