Improvements to Cleveland’s Public Square took a step forward today when the City Planning Commission unanimously approved a temporary, yet robust programming hub. The hub, designed to replace tents currently used by staffers for downtown events would not only provide workers shelter and a place to store materials, but also function as a kiosk for posting event schedules and wayfinding.

With each new donation and grant, sponsors of the planned $45 million Irishtown Bend Park in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood move closer to their fundraising goal. And today, they moved a lot closer with $10.8 million awarded by the National Park Service’s Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) Program.

The work to improve Cleveland’s centuries-old Public Square, a New England-style community commons, is never done. To that end, Downtown Cleveland Inc. will receive $750,000 in funds from the Ohio legislature’s one-time Strategic Community Investment Fund for a more welcoming, engaging and inclusive Public Square for all.

In a project beset with hurdles — primarily centered around money — the effort to move forward on developing the 23-acre Irishtown Bend Park in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood got a big financial boost today. That boost came from a $5 million challenge grant from the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation. If enough donations are received by the end of 2024 to match the challenge dollar-for-dollar, it could generate up to $10 million.
