CLE to get flights to New Orleans, Austin, Salt Lake City, more
New nonstop air service from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) will be offered by Frontier Airlines to 10 additional destinations starting this May. Those destinations include New Orleans, Jacksonville, Houston, Myrtle Beach, Austin, Charleston, Savannah, Salt Lake City, Pensacola and Baltimore.
The new routes are in addition to service announced last month from Cleveland to Minneapolis-Saint Paul and New York LaGuardia, plus a new route to Montego Bay, Jamaica reported by NEOtrans in December that will start service next month.
With the new routes, Frontier will serve a total of 30 destinations from Cleveland, increasing average peak summer daily departures by 38 percent versus a year ago. To celebrate, Frontier is offering fares as low as $19 and Premium Seat Upgrades starting at $19 on all routes operating from Cleveland. There are restrictions on those fares.
“Our growth in Cleveland is soaring,” Frontier Airlines CEO Barry Biffle said in a written statement. “We’re thrilled to connect consumers in Northeast Ohio with low fares to even more destinations throughout the U.S. Our new crew base at CLE set to open in March will help support our rapidly growing operations.”
The new flights are due to Frontier’s March opening of a new 500-employee crew base at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. The base is expected to employ up to 110 pilots, 250 flight attendants, 50 aircraft maintenance personnel and at least 50 additional airport employees within its first year of operation, airport officials said in November.
In December, the city hired Paslay Group to begin a Terminal Modernization Development Program of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport’s 1950s-era passenger terminal, access routes and rental car facility (Division of Port Control).
The airline is expected to generate nearly $80 million annually in local wages with further growth anticipated in the coming years, said Mayor Justin Bibb and airport officials at the city’s Division of Port Control. They are also about to start detailed design and engineering for a $3 billion redesign of Cleveland Hopkins Airport.
“We at Cleveland Hopkins are incredibly pleased with the increasingly diverse mix of business and leisure destinations Frontier is adding for Northeast Ohio residents and visitors alike,” said Cleveland’s Director of Port Control Bryant Francis.
“Today’s announcement brings Frontier to 30 nonstop destinations, more than any other airline at CLE, and includes new service to several of our top unserved markets,” Francis added. “This expansion further solidifies Frontier’s commitment to Cleveland and Northeast Ohio and we look forward to welcoming the additional service and the new opportunities it will create for travelers.”
All routes from Cleveland, both new and existing, are featured within the airline’s current fare sale. Those include routes with service four times per week to Charleston, SC (CHS), Houston Bush (IAH), Jacksonville (JAX), Minneapolis-Saint Paul (MSP) and New Orleans (MSY).
Three-days-per-week service will be offered on routes to Myrtle Beach, SC (MYR), Austin, TX (AUS), Savannah, GA (SAV), Salt Lake City (SLC), Pensacola, FL (PNS) and Baltimore (BWI). While those flights will start in May, daily flights to New York LaGuardia (LGA) are scheduled to start April 10.
