The redevelopment of MLK Plaza, 9300 Wade Park Ave., in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood would replace an aging, mixed-use complex with modern, low-income housing over ground-floor programming and common areas.

Cleveland city officials followed through on a promise they made in early July when they announced they would be making the city-owned McCafferty Health Center property, 4242 Lorain Ave., available for redevelopment. Today, they issued a formal invitation to professional real estate development teams to respond to a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to redevelop the site and address the need for affordable housing in the Ohio City neighborhood.

According to a public record located by NEOtrans, a groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Sept. 5 for the redevelopment of a vacant 10-story apartment building at 9410 Hough Ave. in Cleveland’s resurgent Hough neighborhood. Kristi Halford, a spokesperson for the project’s development partners, confirmed the scheduled event in an e-mail to NEOtrans.

Increased interest in reviving historic structures around the mostly intact Broadway-East 55th intersection in Cleveland’s Slavic Village neighborhood has expanded to include the 113-year-old Olympia Building, 3335-3361 E. 55 St. That building will feature renovated apartments over existing storefronts and the preserved lobby for the Olympia’s adjacent movie theater demolished long ago.

Although the names and themes were previously announced, designs for a new French-themed restaurant and speakeasy in Downtown Cleveland were made publicly available for the first time yesterday. They show a well-appointed establishment with a construction budget to match. A joint venture proposing a four-story apartment building in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood called the Treehouse Apartments, first reported by NEOtrans last month, will go before the City Planning Commission’s Design Review Committee to present their plans this Friday. While the project would add dozens of new housing units to the neighborhood to respond to as-yet unsatiated demand, it would also result in the demolition of three 19th-century houses.
