Cleveland Clinic sees a busy 2023

For several years, NEOtrans has been following the emergence, planning and development of major projects at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation’s Main Campus on the city’s East Side. In 2023, shovels will go into the ground for several of those projects which, in total, will rival the global health system’s last big building boom that occurred about 15 years ago. NEOtrans interviewed two Cleveland Clinic leaders to learn more about the Clinic’s $1.3 billion construction program.

First look at Cleveland Clinic’s largest-ever building

In several days, the City Planning Commission’s Design Review Committee will get its first chance to offer its opinion on what will be the Cleveland Clinic’s largest-ever building. The facility will be the new home of the Clinic’s Neurological Institute — a 1-million-square-foot structure that will tower over Carnegie Avenue, between East 89th and 90th streets. It is the current site of the eight-story P Building surgery center that is now is the process of being demolished.

The future of the Cleveland Play House site

Planning and development activities by several large players are pointing toward the need for constructing thousands of housing units in and near the Cleveland Clinic and the nearby booming University Circle area. And while the large number of housing units already under construction in and near University Circle is evident, it’s likely that they will start rising west of the Clinic’s main campus soon.

Cleveland Clinic’s big projects are on the move

To say that the Cleveland Clinic has a lot of development activity on its plate would be a major understatement. And some of that $1.3 billion worth of construction at its Main Campus is already starting to manifest itself on the landscape. The Clinic is starting site preparation work for its massive new Neurological Institute on Carnegie Avenue. It delivered plans to the city for its expanded Cole Eye Institute. The health care system is prepping the site for the first phase of its new pathogens center. And it is finalizing plans for a full or partial demolition and redevelopment of the ex-Cleveland Play House property, the details for which could be released this fall.
