Great Lakes Brewing Company (GLBC) officials today confirmed a report published by NEOtrans last weekend that they are pursuing development on Cleveland’s Scranton Peninsula in the Flats. The first phase of that development was described by GLBC founders Pat and Dan Conway as “a potential entertainment venture and beer garden,” in a statement they issued today.

A design review panel of Cleveland’s Planning Commission today approved Bedrock’s final masterplan for its multi-phase, $3.5 billion riverfront development. Mayor Justin Bibb’s administration is requesting an important amendment to the city’s riverfront tax increment financing (TIF) district that would do three things. One spells out exactly what infrastructure work would be done. A second would extend the 30-year TIF to 42 years. And the third and perhaps most controversial is that it would pledge undefined future TIF revenues to start infrastructure work now.

Although Cleveland Planning Commission’s Design-Review Committee gave a unanimous thumbs-up today to conceptual plans for downtown’s Canal Basin Park, it wasn’t without some suggestions for improvement. The design team for the 20-acre park, located between turns in the curvaceous Cuyahoga River, will come back to the commission with refined, more detailed schematic designs in the coming months.

For much of the past 50 years, Scranton Peninsula, across the curving Cuyahoga River from Downtown Cleveland, had become an increasingly desolate place. It saw its two largest industrial employers — Northern Ohio Lumber and Republic Steel’s Upson Nut Division — depart, leaving the 75-acre peninsula scarred and mostly vacant. If there was anyone who would be a perfect fit to take over the operation of a restaurant named Shooters, it would be a guy named Machine Gun Kelly. The riverside restaurant will reportedly be the singer and songwriter’s second establishment in Downtown Cleveland’s Flats entertainment district and is due to be renovated and reopened in the summer of 2025.

The next phase of Bedrock’s Downtown Cleveland Riverfront development is proposed to feature a large, 17-story entertainment complex topped by a hotel. Dubbed Rock and Roll Land, it is the largest of seven Northeast Ohio projects and is seeking the largest award possible in the fourth and final authorized round of the Ohio Department of Development’s Transformation Mixed Use Development (TMUD) tax credits.
