Though the $119 million Lakewood Common project celebrated its groundbreaking in late September, the former Lakewood Hospital site has remained dormant for more than a month. Finally, construction crews have begun to clear the site—a large, sunken plot known by locals as “The Pit”—to make way for a new mixed-use development.

At long last, construction crews are on location today to begin site preparation for the $115 million Downtown Lakewood mixed-use development called Lakewood Common. It’s a sign of progress that’s been pursued by two mayors and two different developers since the city-owned Lakewood Hospital was closed by Cleveland Clinic in 2016.

It’s a tough time for the film industry, and an even tougher time for historic theaters like the Capitol Theatre, 1390 W. 65th St., trying to pay its bills. Three redevelopment projects — two on Cleveland’s west side and one in Lakewood — were awarded financial assistance today by the Port of Cleveland’s board to advance them to construction in the coming weeks. The assistance totaled more than $97 million worth of financing, sales tax savings and bonds.

Developers of the proposed Downtown Lakewood mixed-use development said it was a mix of good and bad news that a grocery store chain backed out of the project. The good news is that the developers can proceed with a previous plan to offer a larger public plaza facing Detroit Avenue. The bad news was that revising the plans to accommodate the grocer cost the developers eight months of time and inflation in delivering the $100-plus-million project.
