Cleveland Clinic marked a major milestone late yesterday in the construction of two research buildings in the Cleveland Innovation District. A ceremonial beam-lifting event celebrated the placement of the two final steel beams in the skyway bridge that will span East 100th Street, connecting the new facilities.

Cleveland Clinic Foundation continues to keep the ribbon-making industry in business as it cut another streamer today in opening the latest addition to its growing Main Campus near University Circle. The new building is part of a $172 million expansion and renovation of The Jeffrey and Patricia Cole Pavilion at Cleveland Clinic’s Cole Eye Institute.

Cleveland’s Central and Fairfax neighborhoods haven’t been a hot zone for new real estate development since the Jazz Age of the 1920s and 30s. Back then, streets like Cedar, Central and Quincy were hopping with jazz clubs, speakeasies, flappers and gangsters. Aside the many night spots were factories that hummed with tens of thousands of jobs during the daytime hours. Most were tightly clustered along the four-tracked Pennsylvania Railroad that was elevated in 1915 to reduce traffic congestion.

For many Greater Clevelanders and visitors, they now enter the Cleveland Clinic’s Main Campus and the University Circle area on the new Opportunity Corridor Boulevard. But few people traveled on the East 105th street portion before the boulevard was completed in late-2021. In the midst of a global pandemic, state, local and Cleveland Clinic officials in 2021 announced the Cleveland Innovation District to expand health care research. Today, as part of that initiative, Cleveland Clinic unveiled the first phase of its expanded research facilities and announced plans to launch major construction of two new research buildings. The state-of-the-art facilities will be dedicated to scientific investigation and will significantly increase laboratory research space on Cleveland Clinic’s main campus.

Two years ago, Gov. Mike DeWine announced hundreds of millions of dollars to launch the Cleveland Innovation District — a program to advance health care, research and related activities in the Greater Cleveland area. This week, one of the largest and most visible outcomes of that initiative will be unveiled in the form of plans for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation’s next phase of its Global Center for Pathogen and Human Health Research at its Main Campus in Cleveland’s Fairfax neighborhood.
