Barring a surprise, the last of the big hurdles appears ready to be surpassed for the Cleveland Browns football team’s move from downtown to Brook Park. Yes, there’s a million other things that can happen or not happen in the next year before financing might close and construction contractors are given the green light. But most of those hinge on events occurring now at committee hearings in our state’s capital.

Is DeWine’s stadium tax idea a good bet?

Everything from helping to finance a new stadium for the Cleveland Browns to funding sports programs for low-income families could be supported by a new sports facility and education fund sought by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine in his proposed state budget. But the proposed fund doesn’t pick a stadium site for the Browns, which appears to give Downtown Cleveland site backers more of a win than it does for the owners of the pro football team.

City to invoke Modell law against Browns move

Cleveland City Council President Blaine Griffin confirmed this week that the city will invoke the state’s Modell Law to stop the Cleveland Browns from leaving the city for a new stadium site in suburban Brook Park. He also said the city and county are in a joint effort to keep the team playing its home games downtown with Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne leading the fight.
