One month ago, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) won a $72.8 million federal grant to reroute freight train traffic south of the Menomonee River and away from Downtown Milwaukee. ‘Lakefront plan’ becoming ‘lakefront project’

One of the most important pieces of legislation regarding the future of Downtown Cleveland’s lakefront is working its way through Cleveland City Council. The proposed ordinance amendment, if passed at council’s next regular meeting Sept. 9, would codify the desired lakefront land-use features and set the city on a course to implement them. In other words, it would no longer be a lakefront plan, but a lakefront project.

Cleveland seeks one big grant for lakefront connector, Shoreway Blvd, multimodal station

In one of the largest single federal grant requests ever by the city of Cleveland, Mayor Justin Bibb’s administration is seeking $268 million from the federal government to tackle four main lakefront improvement projects simultaneously. The projects, which include reconfiguring the Shoreway highway into a boulevard with intersections, have the backing of the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), Cuyahoga County and others.

Amtrak seeks $300m for Great Lakes-area stations

Cleveland and other Northern Ohio cities would gain new, larger train stations from a program proposed by passenger railroad Amtrak to improve its intercity services here. The program, a five-year, $300 million Great Lakes Stations Improvement initiative, represents the first time in Amtrak’s 53-year history that it has pursued such an aggressive development effort for this region and specifically for the Cleveland-Chicago route.

Cleveland’s Greyhound/Barons Bus station futures

While city-to-city bus services have vacated traditional downtown stations for remote, curbside boarding locations in Ohio cities like Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton, Cleveland travelers may be spared that treatment in a plan being worked out with the city. But city planners and advocates say the long-term station site may be a new multimodal transportation center linking all modes of intercity and intracity transportation elsewhere in Downtown Cleveland.

Greyhound, Barons may offer downtown, west-side stops

With the clock ticking down to an eventual departure from the 75-year-old Greyhound station in Downtown Cleveland, the operator of long-distance bus services is seeking new stations to serve area travelers. After an earlier plan to relocate Cleveland’s station to the Triskett Red Line rapid transit station on the west side met civic resistance, Barons Bus Inc. is pursuing two stations locally. Cleveland-based Barons operates bus service under a license with Greyhound.
