Perhaps as early as Monday, affordable housing developer Pennrose LLC of Philadelphia will get a deed and the keys to the hulking mass of brick. concrete, steel and memories that is the Warner & Swasey Co. factory, 5701 Carnegie Ave. The hope since 2018 has been to turn this long-vacant site into affordable housing. But if money was as abundant as hope for this property, its redevelopment wouldn’t have experienced a new, $2 million setback.

It’s been a long road for the former Warner & Swasey plant, 5701 Carnegie Ave. in Cleveland’s Midtown neighborhood, to become a useful building again. Cleveland State University is seeking to redevelop the Wolstein Center arena site in Downtown Cleveland and today issued a request for developers to submit their qualifications to do the job. Cleveland Development Advisors (CDA) has allocated $10 million in federal New Markets Tax Credits to Cleveland Kitchen, originally Cleveland Kraut, to consolidate and expand its production facility in the Central Kitchen Food Hub. The hub is a food incubator and accelerator on Carnegie Avenue in Cleveland’s Midtown neighborhood.

Tennessee-based laboratory services company LabConnect and local fermented foods producer Cleveland Kitchen Co. were approved this week for a combined $1.1 million in state job creation tax credits for up to 250 new jobs at facilities in Cleveland. Meanwhile, a growing Vendors Exchange International, LLC plans to move its offices and manufacturing facilities from a western suburb to Maple Heights where it will expand to more than 70 jobs, thanks to financial support from Maple Heights.

In the midst of a global pandemic, state, local and Cleveland Clinic officials in 2021 announced the Cleveland Innovation District to expand health care research. Today, as part of that initiative, Cleveland Clinic unveiled the first phase of its expanded research facilities and announced plans to launch major construction of two new research buildings.
