Back when Cleveland was an industrial powerhouse, few wanted to live near its dirty, noisy industries. Today, its largest source of employment is the education and health services sector — a cleaner industry to which it’s attractive to live within a short walk or bike ride. It is centered in and near University Circle, surrounded by long-neglected neighborhoods. But investment has been coming into those places — Hough, Fairfax, Glenville, Cleveland Heights’ Top of the Hill, and East Cleveland’s Circle East — bolstering them as neighborhoods of choice.

University Circle apartments planned

Although still very early on in the development process, a Greater Cleveland real estate partnership is considering building a 24-unit multi-family development in Cleveland’s University Circle and has a target date of next August for breaking ground on it. The potential development site is across East 118th Street from Case Western Reserve University’s Nobby Ballpark and next to the old East Cleveland Township Cemetery.

CWRU reveals research center details

Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) President Eric Kaler yesterday announced the details of the university’s new, 200,000-square-foot research center intended to promote collaborative discovery and innovation. Called the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building (ISEB), the $300 million investment represents the university’s largest-ever project on the Case Quad, northeast of Euclid Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

CWRU institute replacing BioEnterprise

After announcing last month that it will join others in acquiring BioEnterprise Corp.’s assets, Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) has developed plans to remake a portion of the nonprofit business incubator’s University Circle property into a home for a nascent research effort for improving human-machine interaction. Called the Human Fusions Institute (HFI), the national effort based in Cleveland at CWRU to advance socially responsible innovations in prosthetics, robotics and even gaming could see renovation work start later this year.

CWRU’s $300m research center moves forward

A proposed Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building with a construction budget roughly equal to that of the new Sherwin-Williams headquarters’ original tab is no longer just an idea for administrators, staff and students at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). The university is already making moves to relocate classes and other services and activities out of Yost Hall, 2049 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., so it can be demolished this summer to make way for the new research center.

CWRU seeks $300M research center

At an alumni event earlier this week, Case Western Reserve University President Eric Kaler announced that the university has begun philanthropic fundraising to construct a new $300 million Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building. The new research facility was part of the university’s campus masterplan that was completed in 2018 but various components of it, including the expanded South Campus Residential Village now under construction, were delayed by the pandemic.
