2006-built store to get updates inside, out
Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the Target store at West 117th Street and Interstate 90 in Cleveland’s Westown neighborhood. And after two decades of pretty heavy foot traffic, it needs a freshening up.
It will get that update in 2026, according to plans submitted Sept. 26 by the Minneapolis-based retail giant to Cleveland’s Building Department. Called the Cleveland West store No. 2226, it is located at 3100 W. 117th St.
The 126,858-square-foot store is among thousands of Target retail locations nationwide that are due to get remodeled between now and 2030, according to a company statement released earlier this year.
“Shoppers continue to seek differentiated options and distinctive shopping experiences without sacrificing value, and Target has the scale, strategy and capabilities to support all the ways consumers shop and engage with brands,” said Target CEO and Chairman Brian Cornell in a written statement.
“Our strategy is all about creating today’s Tarzhay, offering everyday discovery and delight for millions of families and ensuring Target is a consumer favorite for years to come,” Cornell continued.
Stephen Fautsch, a principal at Minneapolis-based RSP Architects, submitted the plans to the City of Cleveland. Those plans show that Target Corp. intends to invest $2,118,602 in the renovation.
“This store will be receiving updates both on the exterior and interior of the store,” Fautsch wrote in the application. “Exterior updates include updates to the building finishes, site furnishings, accessible parking stalls, sidewalk updates as needed.”
“Interior updates will consist of reconfiguration of spaces, updates to the finishes at the sales floor, offices, bathrooms, guest services, grocery, fitting rooms, entry, and Starbucks,” he added.
Through its ongoing effort to add more than 300 stores over 10 years, Target plans to open around 20 new stores, the majority large formats, and invest to remodel many more across the country in 2025 and 2026.
Physical stores offer the space and flexibility to incorporate the best of Target’s shopping experience while powering more efficient fulfillment operations and fueling digital growth as part of the company’s stores-as-hubs model, the company said.
Target directly owns the West 117th store. The store was appraised at nearly $11 million in 2024 for tax purposes, county records show.
Next door, in 2008, Giant Eagle opened an attached 86,225-square-foot grocery store. But it is set on a separately-owned parcel owned by an affiliate of Pittsburgh-based Echo Realty.
