In the three years since Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) first announced plans for a new Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building (ISEB), the $300 million donor-supported project has seen substantial progress.

The research center is located in the growing University Circle neighborhood, where housing for students and employees alike is in high demand. A number of residential developments intend to capitalize on that demand.

The ISEB sits on a four-lane, one-way section of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive where many buildings have their parking lots. The tower crane pictured has already been taken down (Harrison Whittaker).

ISEB will host wet labs, dry labs, a shared core lab, and an open gathering area on the first floor. The building’s interdisciplinary focus positions it to solve complex research problems that cut across traditional academic boundaries.

Upon opening, the structure will be the largest on Case Quad. On its southwest side, it will also give the university a more welcoming street presence on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The building is being constructed by Discovery Builders and was designed by HGA.

Much of the ISEB’s construction had been obscured by trees on Case Quad during the warmer months (Harrison Whittaker).

While ISEB is adding spaces for collaborative research, others are thinking about where students and professors will live.

At the northeast corner of University Circle, Alpha Apartment Management recently completed a 14-unit development called Victory Villas, 1555 E. 118th St. The project also included the renovation of two duplexes next door, unpretentiously nicknamed The Yellow House and The Grey House.

Victory Villas stands on East 118th Street, across from Nobby’s Ballpark (Harrison Whittaker).

Meanwhile at the corner of East 116th and Euclid Avenue in the Uptown retail district, fencing has gone up beside the historic Monmouth Building.

In 2023, a proposal by WXZ Development to renovate the existing structure and develop a new construction residential building behind it was awarded Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credits.

The Monmouth Building is located at 11619 Euclid Ave. in the Uptown district of University Circle (Harrison Whittaker).
