Reno, new-build planned at Ford, Hessler in University Circle

Two high-profile properties owned by University Circle Inc. (UCI) are proposed to be sold to a partnership led by two men with experience in developing real estate in the University Circle area.

The partnership comprised of Russell Berusch and Rick Maron propose to renovate the exteriors and modernize the interiors of two historic buildings on Ford Drive. They also want to add a four-story building on Hessler Road, behind the Ford dwellings. The new building would be filled with 23 micro-unit apartments.

Clark Avenue is one of those strange streets in Cleveland with an odd mix of buildings.
It has a lot of older structures. On the sidewalks are storefronts and taverns topped by a few apartments. There’s a scattering of light industrial buildings from the 1800s and early 1900s. And then there’s all those newer single-use buildings — mostly fast-food restaurants and small-box stores — set back behind lots of pavement and empty parking spaces.

On most days, Jeff Epstein is a very busy man. Not only is he executive director of the community development corporation MidTown Cleveland Inc., he also heads up the Health-Tech Corridor.

The Health-Tech Corridor is a decade-old collaboration between MidTown Cleveland, BioEnterprise, The Cleveland Foundation and the City of Cleveland. It works to attract and grow health technology businesses to the corridor linking Downtown and University Circle.

Plans for what would be the tallest building in Cleveland’s University Circle received final approval today from the City Planning Commission. The swift and unanimous approval of The Artisan, 10600 Chester Ave. in the new Circle Square district allows the development consortium led by Midwest Development Partners to apply for a building permit from the city.

Two births were noted in 2014. Ideas for a pair of major urban core real estate developments in Cleveland — nuCLEus and Circle Square — were set into motion, leading to much excitement and debate by everyone from urbanistas to media to fellow developers to elected officials.

Little Italy demolition OK’d, development plan tabled

It’s not Italy’s Leaning Tower of Pisa, but La Barberia University Spa, 12115 Mayfield Rd. in Cleveland’s Little Italy, has an obvious eastward lean to it. In fact, the only things keeping the 126-plus-year-old building from tipping into the Tavern of Little Italy next door are some support posts and an enclosure for an automated teller machine.
