The fate of the National Acme plant at 170 E. 131st St., where Cleveland’s Glenville and Collinwood neighborhoods meet, is an all-too common story about the demise of a major employer-turned-abandoned factory. But community leaders today said they hope that what’s promised for this neglected, toxic site will also become a common story for Cleveland’s many problematic properties.

Without any visible activity in nearly two years, rumors circulated throughout Cleveland’s development community that the roughly $500 million Centennial redevelopment, 925 Euclid Ave. in Downtown Cleveland was dead. Similar rumors circulated about the fate of the Rockefeller Building, 614 W. Superior Ave., and renovations to Rhodes Tower, 2124 Chester Ave., one of the projects in Cleveland State University quieted development master plan.

Collinwood grocery store redevelopment sought

Cleveland city officials revealed their intentions today to acquire and redevelop a closed grocery store property, 15900 Lake Shore Blvd., in the North Collinwood neighborhood. Officials requested City Planning Commission approval to start assembling the land, then later rezone it and ultimately offer it to developers through a community-driven request for proposals.

Biotech biz plans $12M investment in East Cleveland

One week after the Cuyahoga Land Bank completed a $3.5 million renovation of the Mickey’s building, 12550 Euclid Ave., in East Cleveland, it announced the sale of the building to Verdynt Bio, a Boston-based science facility developer with strong ties to Ohio. Verdynt Bio’s operations partner, SKYLIIT Labs, said it plans to invest more than $12 million into the site to create 100 jobs in a state-of-the-art laboratory and office co-working space.

Circle East improvements continue, more due

In a 30-acre area of targeted investment called the Circle East District, located in East Cleveland, the Cuyahoga Land Bank announced it has completed major features of its first phase to revive the neighborhood. The multi-phase $95 million effort led by the Cuyahoga Land Bank to rebuild the neighborhood from the sewers up began two years ago. However, a commercial component to the redevelopment has hit a legal snag.
