A conceptual proposal for a residential tower along the West Shoreway, overlooking Edgewater Park, got a little bit taller after it was first introduced to Cleveland’s City Planning Commission last April. Originally proposed at 10 stories, the market-rate apartment building got bumped up to 12 stories and 138 feet tall which puts it over the 115-foot height restriction for that area’s zoning.

Planning documents submitted to the city yesterday reveal that slightly more than half of the former Westinghouse plant overlooking the West Shoreway and Lake Erie could be demolished in preparation for the redevelopment of the surviving structures. According to sources familiar with the project, the surviving portions at the plant at 1200 W. 58th St. in Cleveland are proposed to be redeveloped as a boutique hotel, apartments and leasable commercial spaces plus parking.

A local developer is proposing to build the tallest building between Ohio City and Lakewood’s Gold Coast, within a few steps of Edgewater Park. Yet, at 10 stories tall, the proposed expansion of The Shoreway apartment complex, 1200 W. 76th St., won’t threaten to scrape the sky west of Cleveland’s Battery Park.

And it’s now in the hands of an investor who intends to redevelop the historic property into a mix of uses including residential, hotel, restaurant and commercial.
