Today, the city of Cleveland announced that it was awarded $69.3 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) for its ambitious downtown lakefront redevelopment. This is the second major federal grant for the downtown lakefront since October when the city was awarded $59.7 million from the USDOT. Construction is due to start in 2027.

Two key public officials have, in recent days, suggested that Burke Lakefront Airport be closed down and replaced by a new Cleveland Browns Stadium and supportive developments, parking and public spaces. But if such an idea evolves into a serious project, it would also likely require making interim repairs to the existing stadium.

In a virtual session held earlier today, the community got to see a refinement of plans for Downtown Cleveland’s lakefront that were first shared publicly in July, namely for the area near North Coast Harbor. The plans, showing stadium renovations, transportation investments and conversion of lakefront parking lots to year-round public uses, were developed and refined by a consulting team hired by the city and led by Field Operations, a public spaces design firm based in New York City.

Detroit-based City Club Apartments, a 104-year-old private real estate owner, developer and operator, held a Topping-Off event today on the 18th floor of its 23-story City Club Apartments-Cleveland mixed-use apartment and penthouse community. Mayor Justin Bibb and City Club Apartments Chairman and CEO Jonathan Holtzman were among the speakers at the event that celebrated the construction milestone, opening of the residential pre-leasing center nearby at 313 Euclid Ave. and the announcement of four café/restaurant/bar venues at the new 250-foot-tall tower.

Last week, NEOtrans wrote about three high rises in a single development — the first phase of Bedrock’s riverfront site — that could see construction start by this time next year. But that is by no means the only downtown high-rise development in the works. NEOtrans is aware of 13 high-rise projects of 10 stories or more in various stages of development, not including those already under construction downtown. Cleveland Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam, Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb and Berea Mayor Cyril Kleem, Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne and others are due to make one or more big announcements starting next week that will include the lakefront football stadium, the Browns’ Berea campus, mixed-use developments around both plus a relocated Shoreway. The announcements will be about changes intended to activate the downtown lakefront by the end of this decade in ways it hasn’t been since the 1930s and to create a year-round fan-friendly village around the team’s suburban headquarters and practice facility, according to two sources familiar with the developments.

After a competitive request-for-proposals (RFP) process the city has selected the historic ArtCraft Building, located at 2530 Superior Avenue, as the top pick for the new Cleveland Division of Police (CDP) headquarters. The city will begin negotiations for the site with the property owner’s team led by TurnDev Development and expects to have legislation ready for city council in January 2023.

Officials at Cuyahoga County and now at City Hall are having difficulty deciding where to build their new venues for addressing crime. Three years ago, an effort began in earnest to find a new home for Cuyahoga County’s new jail campus and a new courthouse tower. A steering committee set up to decide that course of action has failed to settle on a site for those facilities in that time. But the city’s efforts to find a new home for its Cleveland Police Department (CPD) Headquarters has been going on for even longer and will continue for at least a few months more, following an announcement today by Mayor Justin Bibb’s administration.

In 2012, backers of and participants in a study of improving the East 66th Street corridor in Cleveland’s Hough and MidTown neighborhoods probably couldn’t imagine how much development would be happening over the next decade along this long-neglected corridor. Many of those same stakeholders are now seeking a major investment in this north-south street to support its further development over the coming decade.

When the Porta-Potties show up at a new construction site, you know it’s for real. In the 9500 block of Buckeye Road in Cleveland’s Buckeye-Woodhill neighborhood, the construction equipment showed up today, too. They’re there to be a part of building the $46.4 million Woodhill Station West development that will bring 120 apartments offering modern housing and on-site amenities mostly to residents of the aging Woodhill Homes public housing complex just north of here. However 30 of the apartments will be offered to anyone who meets income guidelines.
