In two weeks, the board of the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) is expected to approve the sale of land for a planned apartment building just west of the West Boulevard rapid transit station in Cleveland’s Edgewater-Cudell neighborhood. But that development is renewing interest in a neighborhood plan for redesigning streets next to the station to make the area a more comfortable place to walk and could avail more development sites.

A Cleveland-New York development partnership is seeking financing for a significant remake of the heart of Cleveland’s Slavic Village at Broadway Avenue and East 55th Street. Over the next two months, a Cleveland State University study will identify untapped lands in Downtown Cleveland along the inactive light-rail Waterfront Line and consider how to encourage their development for the benefit of the lakefront and the transit line. The findings could ultimately be incorporated into the city’s lakefront plan which has yet to be finalized.

A new initiative has started that, if successful, could reverse decades of urban sprawl, a hollowing out of Greater Cleveland’s urban core and an erosion of its transit system. Those conditions create a wide variety of problems that hurt the region’s environment, safety, economy, human health and exacerbates poverty. The new initiative would reverse that course by encouraging more pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use developments along high-frequency transit corridors in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County.
