Historic buildings to be razed in Flats

A row of buildings along Columbus Road in the Flats is due to be razed in the coming weeks by an active, local real estate developer. But there is no plan to replace buildings, including two from the 19th century that stand in a nationally registered historic district. Instead, according to a partner at the property’s owner, Integrity Realty Group (IRG) of Beachwood, the contiguous buildings would be demolished to keep them from falling down on innocent passersby. No structural analysis was included in the owner’s demolition requests to the city.

City reveals MetroHealth’s West 25th plans

Conceptual plans made publicly available this week for the next phase of development near the MetroHealth medical center along West 25th Street show a slightly scaled-back design compared to previously released massings by the MetroHealth System and shared by NEOtrans last week. Specifically, a proposed new headquarters for the hospital’s police department will be built next to rather than on the first floor of a new 60-unit senior apartment building at the northwest corner of West 25th and Trowbridge Avenue in Cleveland’s Clark-Fulton neighborhood. A future apartment building at the southwest corner may be considered at a later date.

Half of ex-Westinghouse plant to be razed

Planning documents submitted to the city yesterday reveal that slightly more than half of the former Westinghouse plant overlooking the West Shoreway and Lake Erie could be demolished in preparation for the redevelopment of the surviving structures. According to sources familiar with the project, the surviving portions at the plant at 1200 W. 58th St. in Cleveland are proposed to be redeveloped as a boutique hotel, apartments and leasable commercial spaces plus parking.

Bridgeworks wins Landmarks OK, awaits financing

Final design of a 15-story mixed-use tower that’s proposed to be built at the west end of the Detroit-Superior Bridge was narrowly approved today by Cleveland’s Landmarks Commission. But whether the project actually gets built reportedly will depend on whether the project, called Bridgeworks, will win a “megaprojects” tax credit from the state in a few weeks.

GE may demolish historic factory, incubator in Cleveland

A sprawling factory complex on Cleveland’s near-East Side is proposed to be demolished by its owner of the last 130 years, General Electric (GE). The Design Review Committee of Cleveland’s City Planning Commission will hear a presentation this week by GE’s engineering consultant Stantec on why it should approve demolition of the factory, called the Euclid Lamp Plant, 1814 E. 45th St. But not everyone agrees the factory has to be razed before the property can be sold by GE.

Two century-old, walk-up apartment buildings face each other on East 89th Street in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood. One is structurally unsound and in danger of collapse after it was neglected by a so-called foundation facing a huge unpaid tax bill. PearlBrook shopping center to be razed

An historic retail strip where Cleveland meets Parma, but was often better known for its cinematic and musical neighbors, is due to be demolished. In place of the PearlBrook shopping center will be a Sheetz gas station and convenience store, plus some identified future development just north of it. The center, located at its namesake Pearl and Brookpark roads, has been the space between two places ever since it was built.
