Detailed plans for a proposed conference and classroom facility at University Hospitals’ (UH) Cleveland Medical Center were unveiled today and won preliminary approval from the City Planning Commission. But considering the commission’s compliments about the project, it would be a surprise if the commission didn’t give the project final approval in the coming weeks.

Cleveland Airport project’s first two steps take off

Ten days ago, Mayor Justin Bibb announced a $1.6 billion plan to construct the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport’s Terminal Modernization Development Program (TDMP). Today, more details came to light about that plan, called CLEvolution, as the City Planning Commission unanimously approved the first two steps forward in that eight-year program.

Tower City Center lacks coherent future without more development, rail access

Ohio City townhomes project gets 2nd shot

A long-planned and contentious townhomes development at 4705 Bridge Ave. in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood is seeing signs of construction activity after being on hold for nearly three years. The project’s revival is due to several factors including an improved for-sale housing market of lower interest rates, more fluid financing for construction and a new construction contractor that was hired.

Collinwood grocery store redevelopment sought

Cleveland city officials revealed their intentions today to acquire and redevelop a closed grocery store property, 15900 Lake Shore Blvd., in the North Collinwood neighborhood. Officials requested City Planning Commission approval to start assembling the land, then later rezone it and ultimately offer it to developers through a community-driven request for proposals.

Adding ridership generators to the Waterfront Line

Over the next two months, a Cleveland State University study will identify untapped lands in Downtown Cleveland along the inactive light-rail Waterfront Line and consider how to encourage their development for the benefit of the lakefront and the transit line. The findings could ultimately be incorporated into the city’s lakefront plan which has yet to be finalized.

Largest Hough development in a century

The largest planned, single development in a century is proposed for Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood by reutilizing the huge site of the closed Martin Luther King Jr. High School, 1651 E. 71st St. On that 11-acre property bounded by Hough and Lexington avenues plus East 71st and 73rd streets, 310 housing units and two divisible commercial spaces are planned as part of a neighborhood destination.

New Hough housing seeks affordability

As market-rate housing developments continue to be built in Hough, this east-side Cleveland neighborhood is facing a challenge it hasn’t had to deal with for a century — remaining affordable. To that end, two new developments are moving forward to offer up to 160 workforce housing units plus a few retailers/restaurants that will offer jobs and services to those new residents. Those would add to hundreds more that were recently completed, are under construction or planned in response to strong job growth in and near University Circle.
