Great Lakes Brewing move to Avon on tap?

A Cleveland icon may not be in Cleveland much longer. Executives and owners of Great Lakes Brewing Company (GLBC) are debating a significant relocation of most of its operations out to west-suburban Avon in Lorain County. The 200-employee company has been headquartered and its beer products brewed in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood since its founding 35 years ago. But Avon’s mayor said an announcement may be made about the potential new site “in the coming months.”

Old Aquarium razed for South Gordon Park plan

After sitting empty and rotting away for nearly four decades, the old Cleveland Aquarium at South Gordon Park was finally demolished yesterday by contractors for the Cleveland Metroparks. The regional park system, whose long-term lease of this city-owned site took effect earlier this month, wasted no time in taking down the long-closed aquarium building. In the coming months, Metroparks officials said they intend to seek community input on how to improve South Gordon Park.

Lakefront park expansion advances

While there’s been lots of studies about how to improve Cleveland’s lakefront, one is actually moving forward into formal design and construction permitting — the last step before acquiring funding and construction for an expanded lakefront park. And although the detailed design and permitting will continue through to the end of 2023, a big piece of funding for lakefront park expansion will be decided by voters next month.

Artcraft Building has a new suitor

Often the biggest domino is the last one to fall. That’s the case in the Superior Arts District where one former warehouse/textile building after another is falling under the redevelopment knife and coming out with a new lease on life. The biggest of those old buildings is the Artcraft Building, 2530-2570 Superior Ave. and is proving to be the most difficult to get rehabilitated.

Sokolowski’s to be razed for apartments over retail

Two local businessmen are seeking to redevelop the former Sokolowski’s University Inn restaurant property, 1201 University Rd., into a six-story luxury apartment building, if the project is approved by the city of Cleveland as designed. The first step in the city’s design-review process began yesterday as a Tremont neighborhood block club saw and gave input to the project’s plans for the first time.
